Cold & Flu

Most common childhood illness โ€” usually viral

The common cold and influenza are both caused by viruses, which means antibiotics won't help. Most healthy children recover on their own with rest and fluids. The key is knowing the difference โ€” and knowing when something more is going on.

  • Mild cough
  • Watery eyes

Come In If:
Symptoms last more than 10 days, fever is high or returns after improving, breathing is labored, child is not drinking fluids, or ear pain develops.
๐Ÿ‘‚

Ear Infections

One of the most common reasons kids visit a clinic

Ear infections (otitis media) are extremely common in children under 5, often following a cold. Fluid builds up behind the eardrum, causing pain and pressure. Some ear infections resolve on their own โ€” but many require evaluation and treatment.

๐Ÿ”ด Signs to Watch For
  • Pulling or tugging at ears
  • Fussiness or crying
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Fluid draining from ear
  • Trouble hearing
  • Fever
โœ… At Home
  • Pain reliever (Tylenol/Motrin)
  • Warm compress on ear
  • Keep head elevated
  • Monitor closely
  • Do NOT use ear drops unless prescribed
  • Call your provider
โš ๏ธ
Come In Same Day If:
Fever over 102ยฐF, severe pain, fluid draining from the ear, symptoms lasting more than 2โ€“3 days, or your child seems very ill. We can diagnose and treat ear infections with a same-day visit at Parkside Kids Clinic.

Stomach Bugs (Gastroenteritis)

Vomiting & diarrhea โ€” usually viral

The dreaded stomach bug โ€” vomiting and diarrhea caused by a viral infection โ€” is unpleasant but usually short-lived. The biggest concern with stomach illness in children is dehydration, which can happen faster in kids than in adults.

๐Ÿ”ด Symptoms
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Low-grade fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
โœ… Home Care
  • Small, frequent sips of fluids
  • Pedialyte for young children
  • Avoid juice and sports drinks
  • Bland foods once tolerated
  • Rest
  • Watch for dehydration signs
๐Ÿ’ง
Signs of Dehydration โ€” Act Quickly
Dry mouth and lips, no tears when crying, dark or no urine for 8+ hours, sunken eyes, extreme tiredness or listlessness. See our full dehydration guide, or contact your provider right away if you notice these signs.
โš ๏ธ
Come In If:
Vomiting lasts more than 24 hours in infants or 48 hours in older children, bloody diarrhea, signs of dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or fever over 102ยฐF.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Fever in Children

A sign the body is fighting infection โ€” not always dangerous

Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring their child to a clinic โ€” and one of the most misunderstood. A fever itself is not dangerous; it's your child's immune system doing its job. What matters most is how your child looks and acts, not just the number on the thermometer.

100.4โ€“101ยฐF
๐ŸŸก Monitor
Low-grade fever. Keep comfortable, offer fluids, watch closely. Medication optional.
101โ€“103ยฐF
๐ŸŸ  Treat
Give age-appropriate fever reducer. Monitor closely. Call if child seems very ill.
103ยฐF+
๐Ÿ”ด Call/Come In
High fever. Contact your provider. Any fever in infants under 3 months = ER immediately.
๐Ÿšจ
Always Seek Care Immediately If:
Your child is under 3 months with ANY fever (100.4ยฐF+), fever lasts more than 3 days, your child has a seizure, has difficulty breathing, has a stiff neck, or is extremely difficult to wake.
๐Ÿ’Š
Dosing Tip
Not sure how much Tylenol or Motrin to give? Use our free Pediatric Dosing Calculator โ€” always dose by weight, not age!

Strep Throat

Bacterial โ€” requires testing and treatment

Unlike a sore throat caused by a virus, strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. It requires a strep test and antibiotics โ€” leaving it untreated can lead to serious complications including rheumatic fever.

๐Ÿ”ด Strep Symptoms
  • Sudden severe sore throat
  • Pain when swallowing
  • High fever (101ยฐF+)
  • Red or swollen tonsils
  • White patches on throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Stomach pain (in kids)
  • No cough (key difference!)
โœ… Treatment
  • Strep test required to diagnose
  • Antibiotics prescribed if positive
  • Finish ALL antibiotics
  • Pain reliever for comfort
  • Cold liquids and popsicles
  • Stay home until 24hrs fever-free
  • Replace toothbrush after treatment
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

RSV & Croup

Seasonal respiratory illnesses โ€” know the signs

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and croup are two common respiratory illnesses that peak in fall and winter. While most children recover at home, they can be serious โ€” especially in infants and toddlers.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ RSV Signs
  • Runny nose and congestion
  • Cough (may be severe)
  • Low-grade fever
  • Wheezing
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Poor feeding in infants
๐Ÿ”” Croup Signs
  • Distinctive "barking" cough
  • Hoarse voice
  • Stridor (high-pitched breathing)
  • Worse at night
  • Low-grade fever
  • Often follows a cold
โ„๏ธ
Croup Home Tip
Cool night air or a steamy bathroom can help relax the airways during a croup episode. Sit with your child in a steamy bathroom for 10 minutes or step outside into cool air. If breathing is severely labored, call 911.
โš ๏ธ
Seek Care Immediately If:
Stridor at rest (not just when crying), skin pulling in between ribs, lips or fingernails turning blue, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or your child seems to be working very hard to breathe.

Returning to School or Daycare

A quick reference so you're not guessing on a school-day morning

The general rule from the American Academy of Pediatrics: kids should be fever-free for 24 hours without the help of fever-reducing medicine before heading back.1 Beyond fever, a few illnesses have their own timelines:

IllnessWhen They Can Return
Common ColdNo fever, feeling well enough to participate
FluFever-free 24 hours without medication
Ear InfectionNot contagious โ€” return once fever-free and comfortable
Stomach BugVomiting and diarrhea-free for 24 hours
Strep Throat24 hours after starting antibiotics, and fever-free
RSV / CroupFever-free 24 hours, breathing comfortably
